PPARPeroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptors (PPARs) are ligand-activated transcription factors belonging to the superfamily of nuclear hormone receptors. The three types of PPARs, namely PPARα, PPARβ/δ, and PPARγ, are expressed differentially in various tissues. PPARs function primarily in the regulation of lipid metabolism and glucose homeostasis. The "fibrate" class of drugs, exemplified by clofibrate and fenofibrate, are PPARα agonists that have been used clinically to treat dyslipidemia and cardiovascular disease. PPARγ ligands such as rosiglitazone and pioglitazone belonging to the TZD (thiazolidenedione) class of drugs are currently used as insulin sensitizers in the treatment of type II diabetes. Natural ligands for PPARs include a variety of fatty acids as well as prostaglandins and leukotrienes. Cayman Chemical offers a large selection of products applicable to research on PPARs. These include a variety of agonist and antagonists, antibodies and molecular biology reagents. Recent additions to the product line include the PPAR Transcription factor assay kits and recombinant proteins.
