Description

Three distinct isoforms of nitric oxide synthase (NOS), nNOS/NOS I, iNOS/NOS II, and eNOS/NOS III, catalyze the oxidation of arginine to citrulline and NO with Nω-hydroxy-L-arginine (NOHA) formed as an intermediate.1,2,3 N-HBG is a NOHA analog in which both the α-NH2 and α-COOH groups have been removed. It serves as an efficient substrate for all three NOS isoforms, being oxidized to NO at rates of 65% (nNOS), 68% (iNOS) and 41% (eNOS) relative to NOHA.4
