Prostaglandin E₂ (PGE₂) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) are inflammatory mediators that often co-exist both in vivo and in vitro. IL-1β is a major pro-inflammatory cytokine that can induce the expression of both cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and microsomal PGE synthase-1 (mPGES-1), the key enzymes for PGE₂ formation. Cayman’s PGE₂-IL-1β Luminex^® assay allows users to measure PGE₂ and IL-1β simultaneously for the first time. The unique feature of this assay is the combination of a “sandwich”-type assay for IL-1β and a competitive assay for PGE₂. The assay requires a four hour incubation with no wash steps and can be completed in about six hours.
