Piroxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that non-selectively and reversibly inhibits both isoforms of cyclooxygenase (COX; IC50 = 1.57 and 1.69 μM for COX-1 and COX-2, respectively).1 It has an extended half-life of about 40 hours, which allows once daily administration leading to sustained plasma and tissue levels. In addition to its anti-inflammatory effects, piroxicam is known to be an effective analgesic that has been used extensively in the treatment of arthritis. It has also been used to inhibit COX activity for treatment of certain cancers in animals. As with other NSAIDs, the extended use of piroxicam results in damage to the gastrointestinal lining.
