Kirk M. Maxey, MD - President, Chief Executive Officer
MD, University of Michigan ~ BS Chemistry, Colorado State University
After receiving his BS in organic chemistry from Colorado State, Dr. Maxey worked as a medicinal chemist at the Upjohn Company in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He entered medical school at the University of Michigan in 1980, and after graduation, dedicated his full attention to Cayman Chemical, a research biochemical company he started while still a medical student. Dr. Maxey has been a consultant and expert witness for multiple pharmaceutical companies, as well as a contributing editor and reviewer for Prostaglandins and Other Lipid Mediators.
Peter D. Baldwin - Chief Financial Officer
MBA, University of Michigan – Ross Graduate School of Business ~ BA History, University of Michigan
After receiving his BA in history from Michigan, Mr. Baldwin served in finance and operational roles with two international development-focused nonprofit organizations in Washington, DC before returning to Ann Arbor to complete his MBA with concentrations in finance, accounting and corporate strategy in 2002. Since 2002, Mr. Baldwin worked in investment banking and financial consulting roles in New York, London and Los Angeles before returning to Ann Arbor. He joined Cayman as CFO in September 2017, serves as a member of the Executive Leadership Team, chairperson of the Capital Investment Committee, and as a fiduciary of the Cayman Chemical Retirement Savings Plan. Mr. Baldwin also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Baldwin Foundation and the University of Michigan Intercollegiate Debating Team’s Scholarship Committee.
Michael Pisano, PhD - Vice President of Business Development and Contract Services
PhD Biochemistry, University of Toledo ~ BS Biology, University of Dayton
Dr. Pisano was appointed as Vice President of Business Development and Contract Research in October of 2016. He joined Cayman Chemical in September of 2014 as Vice President of Biochemistry. Prior to Cayman, he worked as President and Chief Executive Officer at Accumed Radial in Ann Arbor. Previously, he worked in various senior management roles with life sciences and medical device companies, including Aventis Pharmaceuticals, Genomic Solutions, Accord Biosciences and NextGen Sciences. Dr. Pisano has oversight responsibilities and provides strategic and technical leadership for the Contract Services Division.
Frank Cox, PhD - Vice President of Global GMP Operations
PhD, Analytical Chemistry, University of South Carolina ~ BS Chemistry, Frostburg State College
Dr. Cox joined Cayman in January of 2013 as Vice President of Global GMP Operations. Prior to Cayman, he worked at Roche Carolina, both domestic and internationally, as Managing Director/General Manager for various sites. Dr. Cox provides global oversight for GMP Operations, Quality, Regulatory and Safety, and GMP Business Development for Cayman Chemical in Ann Arbor and Cayman Pharma in the Czech Republic.
Brian Conkle - Vice President of Global Market Development
BA Biology, Kenyon College
Mr. Conkle joined Cayman in April of 2013 as Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Prior to Cayman, he worked at Axxora as President and VP of Global Sales. Previously he has held sales, marketing, and business development positions with Qbiogene, ALEXIS Corporation, and Calbiochem. Mr. Conkle provides global leadership for the Sales, Marketing, Customer Service and Graphic Design teams as well as Cayman Europe.
Steve Barrett - Vice President of Chemistry
MS, Indiana University- Organic Chemistry, BS University of Michigan - Chemistry
Mr. Barrett joined Cayman’s Medicinal Chemistry Department as a Scientist in 2007 following fifteen years of drug discovery research at Ann Arbor’s Parke-Davis/Pfizer. He was promoted to Manager of Medicinal Chemistry in 2010, and subsequently to Director of Drug Discovery Chemistry in 2014. Mr. Barrett provides oversight of all internal and collaborative drug research programs, medicinal chemistry contract services, and Cayman intellectual property.
Jeff Johnson, PhD - Vice President, Academic Relations
PhD Biochemistry, North Dakota State University ~ BS Chemistry, Bemidji State University
Dr. Johnson was appointed to the position of Vice President of Academic Relations in October of 2016. He joined Cayman in July 1993 as a Research Scientist working on the development of assay kits, proteins and antibodies. Prior to his current role, he held various other positions including Director of Technical Marketing and Services and Vice President of Biochemistry. Dr. Johnson’s current focus is to work with academic scientists and institutions to create networking and training opportunities for advancing biomedical research.
Kristie Donovan Karr - Vice President of Human Resources
MPS, Human Resources and Employment Relations, Pennsylvania State University – BS, Human Resources, Madonna University
Ms. Karr joined Cayman in 2019 as Vice President of Human Resources. Prior to working at Cayman, she held various senior level human resources roles including SVP, Human Resources for Paslin, as well as fourteen years at BASF Corporation as a member of the global leadership teams for various business units. Ms. Karr provides oversight for the HR strategy and all employee and resources management initiatives.
Bill Goeman - Director of Information Technology
BS Computer Science, University of Michigan
Mr. Goeman began his career in Cayman's IT Department in 2004, originally working in infrastructure and systems administration. He now oversees global IT operations including web and application development, as well as technical information management and organization.
Dan Kostrzewa, CMA, CPA - Director of Supply Chain Operations
MS Accounting, Eastern Michigan University
Mr. Kostrzewa started at Cayman in 2005 in the Purchasing Department. After five years supervising that department, he moved into a new role as the Manager of Financial Planning & Analysis in 2012. Due to the company’s growth, Cayman created a Supply Chain Operations division at the beginning of 2016 and named Mr. Kostrzewa its first Director. He now oversees the purchasing, post-production, and shipping functions.
Paul Kennedy, PhD - Director of Analytical Chemistry
PhD, Organic Chemistry, Wayne State University
Dr. Kennedy joined Cayman Chemical in April, 2007 as Analytical Services Manager. Following completion of his graduate degree he worked for PTC Therapeutics as a Medicinal Chemist where he co-developed and patented novel drug candidates targeting RNA mechanisms. From there he spent time at LECO Corporation as the Applications and Product Manager for LECO’s Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry instrumentation. Paul was promoted to Director of Analytical Chemistry at Cayman in 2012 and is responsible for the Analytical Services, Bioanalytical Chemistry, and Natural Products Chemistry departments.
Donna M Iula, PhD - Vice President of Forensic Chemistry
PhD, Organic Chemistry, Stony Brook University
Dr. Iula has worked at Cayman since 2007, starting as a Scientist in the Process Exploration Department and then being promoted to Forensic Chemistry Manager in 2015. Prior to working at Cayman, she did Post-Doctoral research at The University of Miami, and worked at Pfizer supporting their Medicinal Chemistry and R&D efforts as a Senior Research Scientist. Dr. Iula recently was promoted into her role of Director of Forensic Chemistry in January 2017.
Dana Sanford - Director of Development and Production
BS Biology, Lake Superior State University
Mr. Sanford started at Cayman in 1999 in the research chemistry department. Prior to Cayman, he was as an analytical chemist for EnviroLab in Kalkaska, MI. In 2004, Mr. Sanford moved from research chemistry to lead the then newly created chemistry production department. In 2016, Mr. Sanford was promoted to Director of Catalog Production and oversees the chemistry and biochemistry production departments, as well as the chemistry and biochemistry QC departments.
