Invading pathogens, like the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, enter airway epithelial cells through host surface receptors and translate the virus’s RNA to produce more virions. The immune system learns to recognize these pathogens and mounts a defense to destroy infected cells, neutralizing the virus from further infection.
