Cayman was contacted by researchers looking for affordable NBD sphingosine. NBD Sphingosine is a biologically active derivative of sphingosine that is tagged with a fluorescent NBD group. It can be used to study the cellular localization and metabolism of sphingosine and as a substrate for sphingosine kinase for in vitro assays, such as those used for the development of sphingosine kinase inhibitors.
Cayman’s Organic Chemistry Research Department recognized the need to improve the synthetic route and reduce the manufacturing costs. Establishing a new 6-step synthesis method for the product enabled Cayman to cost-effectively produce NBD sphingosine and pass those savings on to researchers by lowering our prices. By making NBD sphingosine more affordable Cayman continues its mission of Helping Make Research Possible.
Sphingosine kinases 1 and 2, which generate sphingosine-1-phosphate, have been implicated in a diverse range of cellular processes, including cell proliferation, apoptosis, calcium homeostasis, angiogenesis, and vascular maturation. Thus, sphingosine kinases are potential therapeutic targets for the control of cancer, inflammation, and other diseases.
