Fenofibric acid is an agonist of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα), PPARγ, and PPARδ (EC50s = 22.4, 1.47, and 1.06 µM, respectively, in a transactivation assay) and an active metabolite of the PPARα agonist fenofibrate (Item No. 10005368).1,2 It is formed by the hydrolysis of fenofibrate in tissue.1 It inhibits COX-2 activity in a cell-free assay (IC50 = 0.048 µM).3 Fenofibric acid (500 µM) reduces aldehyde oxidase 1 (AOX1) protein levels in HepG2 cells.4 Fenofibric acid (10 mg/kg) reduces carrageenan-induced paw edema in rats.3 Formulations containing fenofibric acid have been used in the treatment of high cholesterol and hypertriglyceridemia.
