Hypocrellin B is a fungal metabolite that has been found in H. bambuase and has anticancer and antibacterial activities.1,2 It acts as a sonosensitizer, decreasing the viability of MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells and inducing apoptosis in the presence of ultrasound exposure, effects that can be inhibited by the caspase inhibitor z-VAD-FMK.1 It also increases the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in MDA-MB-231 cells when used at a concentration of 2.5 µM with concomitant ultrasound exposure. Hypocrellin B (20 µM), in combination with ultrasound sonication, is active against methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA).2
