Apocarotenal is a carotenoid that has been found in D. draco and has genotoxic and antioxidant activities and is an active metabolite of the antioxidant terpenoid β-carotene (Item No. 16837).1,2,3 It is formed from β-carotene by β-carotene 9′,10′-oxygenase 2 (BCO2).1 Apocarotenal (100 µM) scavenges free radicals in a Trolox equivalent absorbance capacity (TEAC) assay.2 It increases the percentage of micronucleated cells and the number of sister chromatid exchanges and chromosomal aberrations in primary rat hepatocytes when used at a concentration of 10 µM.3 Formulations containing apocarotenal have been used as food additives and colorants.
