Erinacine C is a cyathane diterpenoid that has been found in H. erinaceum and has diverse biological activities.1,2,3,4 It inhibits transcription of the genes encoding the bacteriocins mutacin IV, mutacin V, and mutacin VI, which are S. mutans virulence factors, in reporter assays using S. mutans.2 Erinacine C (1 mM) increases the production of nerve growth factor (NGF) in mouse astroglial cells.1 It inhibits LPS-induced nitric oxide (NO) production in BV-2 microglia (IC50 = 29.22 µM).3 Erinacine C (2 mg/kg) reduces mild traumatic brain injury-induced motor deficits and neuronal cell death in rats.4
