Human chorionic gonadotropin subunit α (hCGα) is a hormone subunit and a member of the gonadothyrotropin hormone family.1,2 It is composed of a central cysteine knot that forms disulfide bridges with hCGβ or β subunits from other hormones, including luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). Dimerization of these hormones with hCGα activates the LH receptor (LHR), FSH receptor (FSHR), or thyroid stimulating hormone receptor (TSHR).2,3 hCGα is expressed in and secreted from the anterior pituitary gland and placenta.3 hCGα has roles in promoting angiogenesis in the uterus during pregnancy, growth of fetal organs, gonad development and maturation, and production and secretion of progesterone and thyroid hormones.1,4,5,6 Cayman's hCGα (human, recombinant) protein consists of 92 amino acids and has a calculated molecular weight of 10.2 kDa. By SDS-PAGE, the apparent molecular mass of the protein is approximately 25 kDa.
