Progesterone is the biosynthetic precursor of all other steroid hormones.1,2 Progesterone is synthesized from cholesterol by the sequential action of desmolase in the mitochondria, which produces pregnenolone, followed by Δ4,5-isomerase in the outer mitochondrial membrane and smooth endoplasmic reticulum of steroid-secreting cells.3 The main function of progesterone is to prepare the uterine lining for implantation of a fertilized ovum and to maintain pregnancy. Serum or plasma progesterone levels have been used as an index to monitor ovulation and investigate luteal function. Formulations containing progesterone have been used in support of early pregnancy in infertile women, prevention of endometrial hyperplasia, and the treatment of secondary amenorrhea and abnormal uterine bleeding. Cayman’s Progesterone Rabbit Monoclonal Antibody (Clone RM434) can be used for ELISA.
