    Product Description

    8-Oxoguanine is an oxidized form of the purine base guanine (Item No. 34248).1 It is formed by oxidative degradation of DNA by hydroxyl radicals and has commonly been used as a measure of oxidative stress in biological systems.2,3,4 8-Oxoguanine accumulates in the hippocampal DNA and RNA of senescence-accelerated prone mouse 8 (SAMP8) mice, which display early aging and cognitive decline.5 The levels of 8-oxoguanine are also increased in the mitochondrial and nuclear DNA of various brain regions in postmortem tissue from patients with Alzheimer’s disease, but increased urinary levels of 8-oxoguanine are positively correlated with increased survival in patients with stage III or IV cancer receiving radiotherapy.6,1
