Crotonyl-coenzyme A (crotonyl-CoA) is a derivative of CoA (Item Nos. 21499 | 21722) that contains the short-chain fatty acid crotonic acid (Item No. 43903).1 It is formed from lysine and tryptophan catabolism and fatty acid β-oxidation and serves as a precursor to acetyl-CoA. Crotonyl-CoA is a cofactor for crotonyl transferases, which mediate the post-translational modification of lysine residues on various proteins, including histones.2 Histone crotonylation is associated with activation of gene expression.
