OBESITY RESEARCH SOLUTIONS3,3’-Diiodo-L-thyronine (3,3’-T2) is an active metabolite of the thyroid hormones 3,3’,5-triiodo-L-thryonine (T3; Item No. 30996) and 3,3’,5’-triiodo-L-thryonine (reverse T3; Item No. 17598).1 It is formed from T3 or reverse T3 via deiodination by peripheral deiodinases. 3,3’-T2 increases cytochrome c oxidase activity in osmotically treated mitochondria from the livers of hypothyroid and euthyroid rats and increases cytochrome c oxidase activity in liver homogenates from hypothyroid rats at 1 µM.2,3 It increases the resting metabolic rate by 27% and cytochrome c oxidase activity in the heart, liver, muscles, and brown adipose tissue (BAT) in a rat model of hypothyroidism.4 3,3’-T2 (250 µg/kg, i.p.) increases autophagy and reduces hepatic lipid accumulation in rats fed a high-fat diet.5
