Sphingolipids and glycerophospholipids from natural sources contain a heterogeneous mixture of fatty acids attached to the sphingosine or glycerol moiety, respectively.

We have compiled the typical fatty acid composition of Cayman natural lipids here (PDF). Please note the actual composition may vary according to dietary history and growth condition of the source. The exact identity may vary from batch to batch. For additional information, please contact our Technical Support scientists.

API is an abbreviation for Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient, the main ingredient in a medicine that causes the desired effect of the medicine. Some medicines contain more than one API that act in different ways in the body. APIs may also be referred to as drug substances or pharmacologic substances.
A:
CGMP stands for Current Good Manufacturing Practice, a set of regulations that ensures the safety, quality, and consistency of pharmaceuticals. CGMP guidelines include qualification, validation, and documentation.
A:
CGMP compliance ensures the safety, quality, and consistency of pharmaceuticals. It is critical for meeting regulatory requirements for pharmaceuticals. They guarantee the identity, strength, and purity of drugs, protecting consumer health and ensuring product efficacy.
A:
CEP stands for ‘Certification of suitability to the monographs of the European Pharmacopoeia’. DMF stands for Drug Master File. A DMF is a submission to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that may be used to provide confidential detailed information about facilities, processes, or articles used in the manufacturing, processing, packaging, and storing of one or more human drugs.

An Alternate Batch CRM is available to customers who are required to purchase a second/alternate batch CRM when preparing independent calibration and control stocks while doing quantitative analysis. For example, if you wish to purchase two independent batches of THCA-A (CRM), you’d add items “THCA-A (CRM)” and “THCA-A (Alt. Batch CRM)” using their independent item numbers ISO60175 and 41194.

Alternate Batch CRMs have been prepared, tested, and certified independently under the same processes and specifications as the primary CRM equivalent. Ordering an Alternate Batch CRM as a separate Item No. allows for simplicity and confidence in the ordering process.

How do I request an independent or alternate batch CRM?

If a CRM has an Alternate Batch available it will be mentioned in the product features, description, and “Alternative(s)” Product Relationship dropdown on the product page. Customers may add this to their order like any other product. If an Alternate Batch CRM version is not readily available, customers may continue to request an Alternate Batch on their purchase order or by contacting sales@caymanchem.com for a quote.

The formulation of a biochemical compound is listed under the Technical Information on the product’s webpage and the product’s insert. Biochemical compounds are supplied as either a solid, neat oil, or solution and are sold by weight. A solid can appear crystalline or as a fine powder and vary in color. A neat oil is a pure compound that did not crystallize during synthesis or purification. The compound itself is a liquid (i.e. an oil), and no solvent has been added to the supplied product. It is supplied by weight, and a volume is not recorded. A solution is a homogeneous mixture of a compound dissolved in a solvent. The supplied weight of the compound and volume of the solvent are printed on the label of the vial. The density is not determined for our products. For additional information, please contact our Technical Support scientists.

We recognize that purchasing a separate imager and software can be a barrier to labs wanting to run a few assays. Cayman’s Bioanalysis & Assay Development Services can run the assays for a service fee.
A:
The Q-Plex™ kits have a luminescent output. Standard absorbance-based plate readers, typically used for ELISA kits, cannot measure the output of these kits. Each well of these assays contains a matrix of antibodies designed to capture multiple signals from each well. Therefore, even a luminescent plate reader may not be able to capture multiple signals. The Q-View™ Imager LS has been optimized to capture this data. The onboard Q-View™ Software is optimized with this viewer. If you have further questions, contact our Technical Support scientists.

Sphingolipids have limited solubility in many common solvents such as chloroform, hexane, ethyl ether, and even methanol. To overcome this insolubility problem, various solvent mixtures have been developed. One of the most universal sphingolipid solvents is a mixture of chloroform/methanol/water. However, while this solvent system is very useful for analytical testing, it is very toxic towards cells and cannot be used in live cell cultures or other in vivo applications. Several alternative methods have been developed to provide sphingolipid solutions suitable for live-cell studies. Although these methods were primarily developed for ceramides and glucosylceramides, they may be able to be adapted for other lipids.

Read the Sphingolipid Solubilization, Isolation, Analysis, and Storage Advice article to learn more about these alternative methods.

Packaging is chosen to meet the specific needs of the product being packaged. Most of our chemicals are packaged in borosilicate vials with Teflon septa screw caps or crimped septa caps. Specialty packaging may be used for products with specific needs for sealing, such as flame-sealed glass ampules for our Certified Reference Materials (CRMs). If you have specific packaging requirements, please contact our Customer Service staff for assistance.
A:
Milligram and microgram quantities of product may be difficult to visualize within the vial, especially oils, films, and dense liquids or solids. Additionally, transit may disperse the material throughout the inner surface of the vial rather than in a distinct pellet or pool. Centrifuging or shaking down the sealed vial with a flick of the wrist may bring the material to the bottom of the vial. If you still have questions regarding the expected appearance of your product, please contact our Technical Support scientists. Including a photograph of the vial is immensely helpful for comparison to vials in stock.
A:
Cayman takes great care in packaging shipments to prevent damage to inner and outer packaging. While extremely rare, breakages can occur during transit. All products should be inspected upon receipt. If you happen to receive a broken vial, please contact our Customer Service staff within 30 days of the date of shipment for assistance.
