Cholesterol is a minor sterol produced in plant cells and a component of plant surface lipids.1,2,3 Cholesterol content in plants is generally several hundreds- to thousands-fold less than that of mammalian cells.1 It is a precursor in the synthesis of various bioactive plant metabolites, including steroidal glycoalkaloids and phytoecdysteroids.2
