Analytical Standards to Support the CFSRE’s Novel Psychoactive Substance Scope Recommendations: Q2 2026

The NPS Discovery program at the Center for Forensic Science Research & Education (CFSRE) publishes a quarterly scope recommendation to provide the latest guidance in developing an appropriate analytical scope of testing for novel psychoactive substances (NPS).

The NPS Discovery program at Center for Forensic Science Research & Education (CFSRE) has been closely monitoring emerging novel psychoactive substances (NPS) in the United States since 2018, publishing quarterly trend reports on each NPS subclass (e.g., benzodiazepines, opioids, stimulants, hallucinogens, and cannabinoids). Beginning in 2021, NPS Discovery began publishing quarterly scope recommendations to provide laboratories with up-to-date guidance on how to prioritize analytical testing for these NPS.

In Q4 2024, the pairing of recommended target metabolite analytes was added to the quarterly updates, appearing on page 2 of the PDF.

Q2 2026 Scope Recommendations

The CFSRE and the Society of Forensic Toxicologists (SOFT) NPS Committee have recently published the scope recommendations below.

Q2 2026 Highlights

Five new NPS were added this quarter. Those NPS are 5-chloro Desmethyl Chlorphine, Chlorphine, α-Pyrrolidinopentiophenone (alpha-PVP), MDMB-PINACA, and 4-acetoxy MET (4-AcO-MET).
Five NPS moved up tiers compared to the previous quarter's recommendations. Those NPS are Ethylflualprazolam, N-Pyrrolidino Protonitazene, N-sec-butyl Butylone, MDMB-INACA, and dihydro-7-hydroxy Mitragynine (MGM-15).
Five NPS were removed this quarter. Those NPS are N-Pyrrolidino Etonitazene, N-Pyrrolidino Ethylene Isotonitazene, Pentylone, 4-fluoro MDMB-BUTICA (4F-MDMB-BICA), and Dextromethorphane (Dextro/Levo Methorphan).
